A Parenting Time Evaluation (PTE), also known as a child custody evaluation, is ordered by the court when parents are unable to agree upon parenting rights and responsibilities regarding the best interests of their child or children.

A PTE is typically ordered to assist the court in understanding the complexities around the family dynamics while evaluating parenting capacity, the needs of each child, and the comparative "fit" of each child and their parent. A PTE may also be ordered when mediation is unsuccessful or when one or both parents wish to modify the parenting plan.

A quality parenting time evaluation must conform to the Idaho Rules of Family Law Procedure (IRFLP) 719. Every evaluation must also comply with AFCC's Model Standards of Practice for Child Custody Evaluation.
