A summer must-do. Grab your friends or family and float the American River in a raft from American River Raft Rentals. This leisurely float mixes in a little whitewater action in the San Juan rapids. Stay cool on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak on Lake Natoma. The Sacramento State Aquatic Center offers a variety of affordable rentals. Adjoining Nimbus Flat Lake Natoma State Park offers lakeside picnic tables, swimming, and access to the American River Parkway Trail. In the evening, hit the pool at one of Rancho Cordova’s many hotels.

Whitewater: For thrill seekers, head up Highway 50 to the South Fork of the American River, where Class II-III rapids await. For big fist-pumping action, try the Middle Fork or North Fork of the American River with Class IV rapids.

Tip: For fishing fun, schedule a fly fishing excursion on the American River with one of the expert guides at Fish Habit Outfitters.
